Check Out My New Garden Spot!!  I'm so excited!!
Today was the very last straw!! Blogging was just going to happen. Let the rest of the world wait. Any time that your dog jumps out of the back of your truck so she can jump inside a strangers car, well, humiliating experiences like these just have to be told, laughed about and then chalked up as "one of those good stories". Yep. After half a day in the ER, I promised the kids I'd take them to the lake. It is a GORGEOUS day out and one we've been awaiting with much expectation. My shift was over and we'd loaded up for the lake. Little did I know my dog had mutiny about her. Now she doesn't particularly like going to the lake because she knows, INEVITABLY, she's going to get thrown in by somebody. Well, after all, she's a Lab mix with webbed toes. I mean she's supposed to like the water!! So since this happens, she refuses to come when anybody calls her when we're there. Of course this gets us annoyed, particularly when she runs the other way..... So after a few rounds of that, she was sentenced to the truck as punishment. Just as we were pulling away, some nice family pulls up with a pup. She flies out of the truck and I am yelling at her to stop.

I was trying to my re-arrange dry to wet clothing and of course I was no longer inconspicuous as I yelled loudly for her to stop. Too late. I marched over with a big frown yelling sternly. This made her want to get further from my wrath and the best hiding place was inside the families car. It took a lot of doing and apologizing, but I drug her out only for her to slip her collar and jump back in! I didn't bother telling them that she pees when she's scared. I hoped they didn't notice any drips. I was so so frustrated, and the family quite bewildered. I tried explaining that she'd come from the pound. I didn't tell them she'd come from the pound 9 months ago. Finally I picked her up and stuffed her kicking and scratching back into the back of my truck.

I was just thinking all the way out that maybe I'd made a big mistake and should find the first person to take her that said "oh what a cute dog", when she made the absolute stupidest move yet. Even stupider than killing the chicken, even dumber than jumping into a strange families car twice and dribbling, this was the grandaddy of them all. The silly thing decided as I was driving down the highway going about 50mph to jump out!! Yes she did! Time stopped and all my suspicions were confirmed. For a brief second, I was sure I was going to suffer the humiliation of being a "criminal owner" who, for lack of judgment, caused a puppy fatality. When the public outrage ended, at least she'd be gone and I would be dogless. I guess I'd have to live with it. No, whats this? She bounced off the pavement, flopped upside down once or twice and took off running. A kind elderly man slammed on his brakes wanting to tell me what happend but I'd seen it all, for the day anyway. The boys went running off to get her and Miss Libby, no worse for the wear rode home in the cab. I just don't know if I'm cracked up to be the owner of a dumb dog. Our german shepherd just never made these stupid moves - he thought most things through, most.

So this past weekend was Mud Bog weekend here in Bonners Ferry. Its supposed be a lot of fun except for all the drunken brawls. Our friends had come up for the hospital run that morning, as our children had a big score to settle with themselves. Who was fastest? Super Catman and Sweet Tooth Sweetie compete about EVERYTHING and we were all looking forward to seeing them duke out so to speak. Well it turned out to be a lot of fun. Super Catman won the 3k - the girls and I not too far behind. Art Dog came in 2nd on the 5k and Elasta Woman was hot on his tale!! Wow that woman can run!! After the run, and shopping, I made a big ol' Mexican style meal at my place. That afternoon, we had a "mud bog" of our own! We drove through crazy almost impassable places and even through deep natural mud bog!! I drove an old beater 4WD Toyota with Elasta Woman shotgun. The men were quite entertained seeing what we could do. Before it was all said and done the truck had mud every where - even splattered all over the roof! Even Miss Libby was speckled in mud. It was crazy fun!!

There is one more (among so many) that I HAVE to tell!! Its about the mysterious old mountain man who lives down the road. I just didn't know what to think of him. He walks early in the mornings and avoids people. He rarely waves. Once, when I was running, he ran off into the woods and held still like a statue, hiding until I'd gone by. Thin and tan, but wild long flowing hair and an overgrown looking, mysterious property........ My imagination could have gone wild... but I've been praying for the neighborhood and I wasn't about to let this man slip through. I'd determinded EVERYBODY gets something baked from me... EVERYBODY. I wrote him a nice note and sent a meal with the kids who had been embarking on a camping trip at the time. Though he'd been surprised to see them, particularly packing, he was nice to them and told them to send me "for starter plants", and so with that, yesterday, I met the mysterious mountain man....... The only thing he said on the phone was to "plan for some time" and time is a precious commodity, but, time I planned. The kids and I walked over there, up that overgrown path to his house. I went unarmed with anything but a baby and of course, Miss Libby. When we arrived, he was happy to see us. Gone was the stern look with his head down. He was a quite intelligent and charming man of 70. He took us all over his gardens and it turns out he is quite the horticulturist. He spent 15 years working in a tree nursery and has done miracles with trees that "can't be grown here" even a Sycammore tree. He has all kinds of exotic trees growing, as if he lives in a secret, magical land all his own. He believes in self sufficiency, and so he grows and cans and juices and does all kinds of amazing things. He told me right away that he was not a social person, and asked me to never take his picture, but said I could photograph his beautiful labors and that he would be pleased for me to ask him for advice anytime with gardening questions. He has thousands of flowers growing all over and picked me quite an amazing bouquet of them to take home along with sending me his own harvested seeds, cans of his juice, a box of little plant starts. I was overwhelmed by his generousity, knowledge and the vastness of years of planting and growing. He'd gardened and planted trees on this place for thirty years. Forever in my mind will be the memory of this precious soul with a stunning array of flowers holding them out to me and wishing me a "Happy Mothers Day".... Its amazing, just amazing what happens when you just make the effort to try to know somebody for who they are, instead of just taking what you see at face value. I'll leave you with that thought.

Quilt My Husbands Grandmother Made

I am BARELY keeping up with all the adventures we've been having!  This week alone has waaay too many stories to tell.  Well I will give you just a few quick updates :
- A guy who drove the same truck model as my husband and was wearing the same attire (jeans and a green flannel shirt) drove up to our old house on Saturday.  He was quiet and soft spoken just like my husband.  We showed him our house in the Yaak which he is considering buying.........  Its a crazy upside down cool story which I will tell if it all pans out!!
 - I broke the bath tub.  Yes,  I broke the bath tub!!  After 11 years of bathing in a big plastic container, and ONE MONTH with a tub wouldn't you know I would do something so crazy?  See my husband keeps saying "same habits same results" trying to show us that we will have a dumpy hillbilly house if we don't establish some cleanliness and order (lol)!  So anyhow, EVERYONE is doubled up on chores.  Raking, washing, organizing, etc.  Well wouldn't you know I was trying to reach the window above the bathtub to clean.  I stood on the ledge of the tub but I wasn't tall enough... so.... I put a chair in the tub (whoops)!  It busted a hole in the fiberglass. Oh and whoa.....  The other thing big silly thing I did was :
 - I accidentally put UFO marks on the grass.  Yep.  Well heres what happened : I had the kids raking up those big long pine needles out of the yard like a drill Sergeant.  There were so many big heaping piles I didn't know what to do.  Finally I said with a gleam in my eye "burn em!"  Well again, my dear husband got home and informed me that I had destroyed the grass layer under the burned places.  Here I was sooo excited to have a REAL LAWN and now I've up and put UFO marks in it.  Its like I possess this path of destruction to nice and normal everywhere I go.....  Now thats all off my chest and hopefully somebody can laugh with me ;-)
 - My dear sweet husband drove hours AFTER WORK to pick me up the leather reclining couch I desperately needed off of Craigslist.  Wasn't that sweet?!?!  He's been doing many kind acts too numerous to mention and I am super THANKFUL!!
 - All our girls gang and even some boys are gearing up for Bloomsday!
 - The neighborhood bought the metal accessories for and spent an hour putting up the quilt my husband's grandma made.  Its another story, but all in all I'm thankful that I moved to an area with great neighbors!  Miss Moonbeam thinks its become customary that when she visits or otherwise sees some of them they should provide her with soda and various candies ;-)
 - Miss Libby also errantly thinks she can sneak over to the neighbors for treats, visits or attention at will though she gets a very stern reprimand ;-)
 - My husbands bosses wife (better known as Kim Possible one of my favorite cartoon characters) single handily made and coached me with a flower bed in front of the house, knowing I am a severely dysfunctional gardener.....
 - All in all, moving in here has been a good, funny, crazy experience.  I've met so many unique people and made a lot of new friends.  I am super excited for summer, exploring and all the days to come.  I love my beautiful grassy yard even if it has UFO marks in it.  I love hearing the creek as I sit up here on the balcony of my bedroom.  I love having this quaint cabin with brown cement floors and wooded interior.  I feel like a princess in a fairy tale (until I have to do the dishes ;-) ).  I love the new Kitchen Queen Wood Cook stove my husband bought me and I am using it allot.  Theres nothing like having a pot of soup simmering all day or a roast baking tender all night.  I just love it all.  Though I hear crazy stories about people shooting game in their underpants here, I'm not too alarmed.  I think we will all fit in just fine.......

The past month has been nothing but a BLUR! Somehow amongst moving every weekend, work, children and the like, I seem to be unsorting the details of my life and neatly putting them away just like the contents of the box after box that comes through my front door. I have so very many stories but nary the time to tell them.

My husbands 40th birthday was pulled off with a bang! It was only a week or two after we'd moved in and there were boxes all over the place. It seemed crazy to throw a party but I couldn't imagine NOT having a party for his BIG 40 so after working back to back 12 hour nights, I invited a few close friends and threw quite the shin dig! It was hilarious fun playing "Catch Phrase", bbq and just hanging out together. Despite my better judgement, I blared the "Red Solo Cup Song" and whooped it up in his honor ;-)

My daughters Sweet 16 was within the same week, and again, boxes filled the place. I questioned my sanity, again, but how could we NOT throw a sweet 16?!?! So with gritted determination, I did nothing but smile when she announced she was inviting a big passel o' girls for a grand BBQ! Turns out, that too, was outrageous fun! Girls flocked in, especially after my crazy friend Teeny Beena brought a van full from a neighboring city. My friend Kim Possible was there too, making it crazy fun. The mad herd of chicks flocked to the play yard of a nearby school to play "Lightening" and us women folk sat on my patio in the sunshine sipping tea and laughing about a lot of life that only women married 20 plus years can fully appreciate ;-) After a big BBQ, extraordinary cheese cakes and decadent German chocolate cupcakes, the kids settled into my living room and began a music session that I will never forget as long as I live. Those kids rocked my house, all the while shocking and compelling me with raw talent rarely seen. One of Teeny Beena's girls, whom I'd known since she was a wee one was all grown up and singing worship and country songs better than the people on the radio stations do. Clear, confident, rich and powerful, this girl belted it out and there was no questioning why she is headed to Nashville when she turns 18. The presence of God encompassed the place and moved us all in a way only He can. No rich spoiled girl could have been given a better sweet 16 than my girl, surrounded by friends who love her and serenaded by a forthcoming star.......

Now I wish I could say that it was all that simple of a week, but as fate would have it, Miss Libby showed up with a warm dead chicken clutched in her mouth. Dread overtook me and I knew what must be done. After a good whopping with the chicken, I marched her over to the neighbors only to find them gone. I left them a detailed note promising to make good on their chicken and even throwing in a case of beer for good will as I noticed from the front porch that they were of the beer appreciating variety. I promised that if she ever committed such a heinous crime again she'd be shot or returned to the pound or both. After all, once a dog is known as a chicken killer, she's marked, and bullets go a looking. The next day the note was gone and so was one of the neighbors beer boxes. I went down 3 more times that day, but no one was there. The next day I returned the dead chicken. Not wanting it to be too traumatic for its owner, i put the injured looking side down and neatly placed a plate of scrumptious cupcakes near its carcass as a gesture to ease ones grief and anger. The next day, chicken and cupcakes were gone as was another beer box but no person. I was becoming more and more puzzled by the sporadic smoke in the chimney, missing notes, bodies and food. Who was this elusive neighbor and why did they never answer their door? Finally after at least 5 visits, I left a frustrated note asking them to call me. Then one day the boys shouted "somebodies down there"!! With an air of dread, baby on one hip and dog on the other side, I slowly descended hoping for the best. I kept imagining some elusive elderly woman pining the loss of her prize hen. Turns out it was the wild spirited owner of the property home from his travels for a few short days. He laughed the whole incident off and wouldn't hear of taking money or sending me back without a couple dozen fresh eggs. I couldn't help but give him the beer I'd promised, I was so relieved my dog wasn't on a hit list, though my husband remained unimpressed with my peace offering. The mystery was solved when the kid who stayed there showed up later on telling me he worked odd shifts and only slept there. Miss Libby is free for now, but should she take to a murderous Jekel and Hyde side again, well, she's on her last chance for grace. I can't have her doing such things. Its hard, but she'll have to go back to the pound if she does - pray God delivers her from such vices......

My last story is about our house back in the Yaak. Every weekend, even Easter weekend, when normal people are enjoying themselves, we're slaving over that house back there. Endless loads, endless packing, endless projects seemed to await us. The kids began dreading those trips back there, and so did I. I wanted to just stay home in our beautiful new home, and enjoy my husbands days off. This past weekend was different though. My friend, Elasta Woman, had volunteered countless times to help me with moving and countless times I'd told her we were fine. This last time I told her I could use the help painting. Little did I know how much I really needed her. I was getting so tired from working all week and weekend and it seemed like it was never going to end. Then in the darkness, The Incredible Family arrived armed for action to save the day! Elasta Woman, true to her name was like a hurricane. She painted circles around Saphara and I at super heroine speed. Her husband, a master carpenter, also VOLUNTEERED the day to us as did their children. He put a rubber glove on his head and balked like a rooster. Then he began shouting orders to kids and adults and possibly even pets. He had us all running in different directions carrying out the impossible. He looked at impossible projects that I've looked at for 10 years and spit in their gnarled faces. In a short time he had made very doable solutions for things that seemed to be unsolvable. In minutes, he had fixed or constructed or planned what I imagined would take us months to do. I was utterly flabbergasted. Then all around me Elasta Womans capable arms reached around me painting too and fro. All the while her children cleaned and followed their dad's instructions. By the end of the day, I stood amazed and extremely humbled seeing a transformed house that had real potential for being ready to list in the near future. Few things humble me like the power of true friends who give of their time and energy just for the joy of giving. Selah......

And so as we begin to get settled, many adventures begin to unfold and many which I don't have the time or space to tell. Sufficient to tell that our days have been full, rich, and well lived.

CHARGED BY A MOOSE! and The Big Move

There is so much to tell I REALLY don't know where to begin! After spending LATE FALL and THE ENTIRE WINTER searching for a place to live, I was on pins and needles waiting 6 weeks to see if our loan would go through. The bank lady truly could not tell me that I could pack until the last week. It was maddening. As you can see from the last post, a hot spring get away was just what we needed before the long anticipated day!

After that, it was all a blur. Truly not knowing for that long made it hard to do any kind of planning. When we finally got the word, chaos seemed to erupt all around me. How would we ever possibly be ready to move in a weeks time?! Even though I spent the winter purging every room of my house, it just didn't seem to be enough. After so many disappointments through the winter, it was hard to actually believe that this was happening - for real. Saphara jumped in to the rescue by spending many long days cleaning and packing what I couldn't get done. She worked with with a "come hell or high water" unmatched determination.

The day came when I packed up my minivan to the ceiling and drove the kids and dog over to North Idaho. After the bank and the title company, my husband returned to work and us girls got down to the nitty gritty. I was just over half way through cleaning my bathroom when Saphara came to check up on me "what are you doing?!" she asked. She had already done the entire bathroom downstairs and half the kitchen. Super Catman mopped floors while Art Dog cleaned the apartment attached to the garage which would become the "bachelor pad" of he and The Archer. Miss Moonbeam mainly played in my scrub water ;-) That night we had a FAMILY night sacked out in sleeping bags on the only carpeted room of the house (our bedroom). It was a night to remember because it was the first night in our new home.

I had to work a night shift the next night, but my family was going back up to the Yaak to do some more packing. The next morning when I got up, I decided it was high time I do some exploring. My body ached from all the cleaning and hauling I'd done the days before coupled with a 12 hour night shift. It was time for fresh air and adventure!

Almost giddy, I hooked Miss Libby up to her chain and ESCAPED to the Forest! The Archer was working too, so he had stayed back at the new house. He guided me to the right paths to take to get to the nearby lake and then disappeared into his new Forest playground. Happily I marched on. I just couldn't wait to see this new lake. All the while I imagined what it would be like to come here this summer. I felt like the luckiest girl alive! After all this time, after all these houses, God had saved the very best for me. It was so worth the wait. I knew God would come through, and here He had. Not only did we get a beautiful barely lived in home, but we got acreage and forests and even a lake nearby! What a perfect transition for coming out of the Yaak. Soon the path was less travelled. No one had been down here in a while. On we went. After what felt like eons, my puppy and I were gradually descending instead of ascending and I could feel the lake had to be near. Then I saw it! It was beautifully spectacular. Bigger than my little lake back in Montana, this would be a good challenge. I imagined myself swimming it. Just as we got down to the trail along its banks, joyfully I let my puppy off her leash............

Within seconds, I found that was a mistake I would live to gravely regret. Not 20 feet down the trail, bellied in the grass was a moose! He jumped up as my dog ran toward him. How could I have not seen him?! Quickly I ran behind a picnic table and crouched low. That silly dog ran right up to him and it charged her!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing! In all my years in The Yaak I'd never been charged by an animal. My husband was, once, but not me. These kinds of things don't happen to me! To my horror my dog ran straight at me and the moose followed! I went for my gun and held it up breathlessly....waiting. The moose stopped and waited. I stared blankly at it. It hardly even looked like a moose. I'd never seen one like this before. It was all patchy gray and had huge muscles along its front shoulders, neck and legs. A big hump displayed itself prominently behind its neck. I stared long and hard at it wishing I had a camera to later prove this freak of nature. No one would ever believe what I was seeing. He was still now and I breathed slowly not wanting to make any sudden movement. Suddenly my gut wretched when I watched my dog run right back up to him again! I couldn't believe she did that! She was standing inches from it sniffing. I called her but she ignored me. The moose lunged and ran at her again! My feeble minded dog ran straight to me again! Oh this silly stupid puppy..... This time she got close enough for me to grab her collar. I hesitated for a split second. Was having her with me the best thing to do? The decision was solidified in my mind and I snapped the leash on with finality. Down and back I crouched watching as the moose stopped again. I had no where to go. The lake was directly behind me. The moose in front. All that stood between us was a little old picnic table. Twice it had ran directly at me because of this silly dog. What would it do now? I waited, silent and still.... It seemed like an eternity. It just stood there and stared. Finally, after a long time, it turned around and went right up my trail!

Now what? How could I get out of here? I searched my pockets aimlessly and found my phone. There was one bar of reception amazingly, so I called my husband, shaking. He told me to make a wide circle and head back through the forest, assuring me I'd hit highway before long. The thought of wandering through thick brushy unfamiliar forest terrified me, but I knew it was the only thing to do. He said not to ever let my gun leave my hand, and that if I had no choice, to aim for its head. I asked him to have the kids pray, and with that I said "goodbye". Terror seized me, but I made myself take one step and then another as I walked .38 in one hand and leash in the other. Soon I was heading up hill never dropping my guard. It was a bit awkward, so I tried to make believe I was in a spy movie to make the time go faster ;-) There is nothing so terrifying to me as to have to blindly find my way through unfamiliar territory. I was lost in the woods last summer and it was a horrible experience. I didn't want a replay of that, but I also didn't want to run into the angry moose again. Finally, as I followed my peace, I found my way back to the trails and finally to the road.

Relief overwhelmed me and I was happy again, though I never stopped shaking all the way home. As I had expected, my family gave me a lot of grief over the odd looking creature. My husband was also more than displeased with Miss Libby, who stupidly led the beast to charge me twice. I suppose that there are a lot of adventures to be had even though we are no longer living in The Yaak. Therefore I'm going to rename my blog "North Idaho Adventures" unless you readers can come up with something catchier ;-)

Working Mom Blues and The Moronic Maytag Maffia

Here's the picture I remember as a kid. All those crazy commercials about the bored Maytag Man - Remember? For some reason those commercials, THIS FACE, and the idea that Maytag was the standard stuck in my mind..... I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into!!

Follow me on my path of HORROR!!

- Feb 2011 I am THRILLED to get my first ever brand new set of washer and dryer after 20 years of marriage and 5 kids. OF COURSE I insist on Maytags. We drive 3 1/2 hours to the nearest Home Depot to pick them out.

- March 2011 Our order comes in and we pick them up 3 1/2 hours from home. The dryer has no heating element. It is driven 3 1/2 hours back and exchanged for another which takes a week or two of waiting.

- April 2011 I notice a few things coming out of the washing machine with rips. I figure its no big deal, maybe the stuff was getting old.

- May 2011 The washer pours water out of the front all over the laundry room floor and locks up. Maytag visit 1 and 2. I have to wait weeks as the seals are in "high demand and back ordered".

- June 2011 I notice an increase in things wearing out. I wonder whats going on.

- July 2011 My favorite new dress develops a strangely similar rip pattern. I search my house for pack rats but come up clueless.

- August 2011 I discover that multiple items of clothes have identical rip and hole patterns. I try to talk to the Maytag people but they do not believe my complaints. They tell me to look for something sharp in my washer.

- ?Nov or Dec. I hear something strange. I discover my laundry room is FLOODED. The ceiling in the basement has water seeping through the sheet rock onto my husbands projects. The seal is ripped out AGAIN #3 visit from Maytag Man. BTW Around November or December 2011 about 1/10 of all our clothing has identical rip patterns in it. He doesn't know why its doing that. This problem increases significantly after seal no 2.

- January 2012 The Washing Machine has ripped up so much of our clothing my teen is withholding her clothing. My husbands brand new work shirts are all ripped even after one use. Several of my nursing uniforms need replaced. It is common sight to see my boys wearing clothing with holes in their sleeves or lower part of shirts. I am sickened at what has become of our families wardrobes. Every day I feel overwhelmed. I can't afford to replace all the clothing and am fearful of buying anything not coming from a second hand store. By now I have spoken with multiple associates and 2 managers. They tell me repeatedly that they do not replace machines, only service them. I try to explain that they are putting out more money than the machine is worth and so am I. One manager agrees to another year of free servicing - are you kidding?

- February 2012 The Washing Machine is not spinning out. I put in the second work order in a weeks time. The first was for clothing ripping which btw no one acknowledges as a washing machine problem. Supposedly nobody has this problem. They tell my Maytag Man it is a "user error". Maytag man makes visit #4. He does this only with me calling the supervisor headquarters to get him more money for visiting. The man drives an hour and a half up here. He gets into my 4wd vehicle gritting his teeth as I drive him up the wall of ice. He is a brave soul. He replaces the pump and shows me how to clean it out should it happen again.

February 2011 1 week later the washer locks up again and will not spin out. We follow Maytag Mans instructions. A baby sock is in the pump which we remove.

- February 2012 My new snowboard jacket snow skirt is destroyed with same rip pattern. One week later I discover the reason!! My daughters running pants are lodged in between the inner and outer baskets (right behind the seal). It has identical rip patterns. I photograph the lodged sweat pants and call Maytag again. They put in yet another work order.

- My mom finds forums of other Maytag Front Loader Owners with the same rip problem. We spend an hour laughing about crazy scenarios to get my story heard. In these absurd scenarios, I become a national heroine and am interviewed on talk shows as well as being hosted on a reality tv show.....

- I begin collecting and photographing rip pattern clothing in an attempt to keep my sanity.

- March 2012 I call the Maytag Man again to find out why he hasn't come up. He says they didn't pay him for the last time. I call Maytag again. I have spent multiple HOURS on the phone over the past year. I know the routine. I have to go through a series of recorded prompts. Then I have to explain to an associate the whole story before they will let me talk to a manager. Then I tell the manager the same story.... again. This time she tells me that she will present my case to a higher up for deliberation of a new machine. The last two managers told me that there was no one higher up than them and that Maytag NEVER replaces machines. I am shocked and befuddled.

- btw my washer again has stopped spinning out. My husband and oldest son are gone so I have my 14 year old try to fix the pump problem. The Frontier salesman on the telephone tells me laughing "good luck with that". My 14 year old successfully cleans out the pump and the washer again is resurrected to continue its path of destruction.

- Today, Maytag calls me to tell me they are replacing my machine with a brand new one! After all of this, it is actually happening. I feel like the belle of the ball. All those untold hours of fighting with Maytag have finally paid off. I am allowed to select a machine of equal retail price from Maytag or Whirlpool. NONE OF THEM have great reviews. My daughter picks a top loader with the best of the bad reviews........... I still feel like this great victory was a true MIRACLE!
